NCERT Maths Solution Class 6 Exercise 7.6 | Fractions

Problems in Exercise 7.6 require the knowledge of addition and subtraction of UNLIKE fractions.

Unlike fractions can be added or subtracted by adding or subtracting the respective equivalent fractions with same denominators.

• Find the LCM of the denominators.
• Change the unlike fractions into like fractions with the LCM as their denominators.
• Then add or subtract and simplify.

Addition and Subtraction of Unlike Fractions

QUESTION 1

Solve:

(i) \frac{2}{3} + \frac{1}{7} (ii) \frac{3}{10} + \frac{7}{15} (iii) \frac{4}{9} + \frac{2}{7}

(iv) \frac{5}{7} + \frac{1}{3} (v) \frac{2}{5} + \frac{1}{6} (vi) \frac{4}{5} + \frac{2}{3}

(vii) \frac{3}{4} - \frac{1}{3} (viii) \frac{5}{6} - \frac{1}{3} (ix) \frac{2}{3} + \frac{3}{4} + \frac{1}{2}

(x) \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{6} (xi) 1\frac{1}{3} + 3\frac{2}{3} (xii) 4\frac{2}{3} + 3\frac{1}{4}

(xiii) \frac{16}{5} - \frac{7}{5} (xiv) \frac{4}{3} - \frac{1}{2}

SOLUTION

(i) \frac{2}{3} + \frac{1}{7}

= \frac{2\times 7}{3\times 7} + \frac{1\times 3}{7\times 3}  (\because LCM of 3 and 7 = 21)

 = \frac{14}{21} + \frac{3}{21}  

= \frac{14+3}{21}

= \frac{17}{21}

(ii) \frac{3}{10} + \frac{7}{15}

= \frac{3\times 3}{10\times 3} + \frac{7\times 2}{15\times 2}  (\because LCM of 10 and 15 = 30)

= \frac{9}{30} + \frac{14}{30} 

= \frac{9+14}{30}

= \frac{23}{30}

(iii) \frac{4}{9} + \frac{2}{7}

= \frac{4\times 7}{9\times 7} + \frac{2\times 9}{7\times 9}  (\because LCM of 9 and 7 = 63)

= \frac{28}{63} + \frac{18}{63}  

= \frac{28+18}{63}

= \frac{46}{63}

(iv) \frac{5}{7} + \frac{1}{3}

= \frac{15+7}{21}

= \frac{22}{21}

(v) \frac{2}{5} + \frac{1}{6}

= \frac{12+5}{30}

= \frac{17}{30}

(vi) \frac{4}{5} + \frac{2}{3}

= \frac{8+10}{15}

= \frac{18}{15}

(vii) \frac{3}{4} - \frac{1}{3}

= \frac{9+4}{12}

= \frac{13}{12}

(viii) \frac{5}{6} - \frac{1}{3}

= \frac{15+6}{18}

= \frac{21}{18}

(ix) \frac{2}{3} + \frac{3}{4} + \frac{1}{2}

= \frac{8+9+6}{12}

= \frac{23}{21}

(x) \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{6}

= \frac{3+2+1}{6}

= \frac{6}{6}

= 1

(xi) 1\frac{1}{3} + 3\frac{2}{3}

= 1+3+\frac{1+2}{3}

= 4+\frac{3}{3}

= 5

(xii) 4\frac{2}{3} + 3\frac{1}{4}

4+\frac{2}{3} + 3+\frac{1}{4}

= 4+3+\frac{8+3}{12}

= 7\frac{11}{12}

(xiii) \frac{16}{5} - \frac{7}{5}

= \frac{16-7}{5}

= \frac{9}{5}

(xiv) \frac{4}{3} - \frac{1}{2}

= \frac{8-3}{6}

= \frac{5}{6}

QUESTION 2

Sarika bought 2/5 meter of ribbon and Lalita 3/4 meter of ribbon. What is the total length of the ribbon they bought?

SOLUTION

Length of ribbon bought by Sarita =\frac{2}{5} m

Length of ribbon bought by Lalita =\frac{3}{4} m

So, Total length of ribbon bought by them =\frac{2}{5} + \frac{3}{4} m

=\frac{2\times 4 + 3\times 5}{20} m

=\frac{23}{20} m

QUESTION 3

Naina was given 1\frac{1}{2} piece of cake and Najma was given 1\frac{1}{3} piece of cake. Find the total amount of cake given to both of them.

SOLUTION

Total amount of cake given to both of them = 1\frac{1}{2} + 1\frac{1}{3}

= 1 + \frac{1}{2} + 1 + \frac{1}{3}

= 1 + 1 + \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3}

= 2 + \frac{3 + 2}{6}

= 2 + \frac{5}{6}

= 2\frac{5}{6}

QUESTION 4

Fill in the boxes:

(i) \square - \frac{5}{8} = \frac{1}{4}

(ii) \square - \frac{1}{5} = \frac{1}{2}

(iii) \frac{1}{2} - \square = \frac{1}{6}

SOLUTION

(i) \boxed{\frac{7}{8}} - \frac{5}{8} = \frac{1}{4}

(ii) \boxed{\frac{7}{10}} - \frac{1}{5} = \frac{1}{2}

(iii) \frac{1}{2} - \boxed{\frac{2}{6}} = \frac{1}{6}

A piece of wire 7/8 meter long broke into two pieces. One piece was 1/4 meter long. How long is the other piece?

SOLUTION

Length of the other piece = \frac{7}{8} - \frac{1}{4}

= \frac{7-2}{8}

= \frac{5}{8}m

Nandini house is 9/10 km from her school. She walked some distance and then took a bus for 1/2 km to reach the school. How far did she walk?

SOLUTION

Distance covered by Nandini through walking = \frac{9}{10} - \frac{1}{2}

= \frac{9-5}{10}

= \frac{4}{10}

= \frac{2}{5}km

QUESTION 8

Ahsa and Samuel have bookshelves of the same size partly filled with books. Asha’s shelf is 5/6 th full and Samuel’s shelf is 2/5 th full. Whose bookshelf is more full? By what fraction?

SOLUTION

Fraction of Asha’s shelf filled with books = \frac{5}{6} = \frac{25}{30}

Fraction of Samuel’s shelf filled with books = \frac{2}{5} = \frac{12}{30}

Now, \frac{25}{30} - \frac{12}{30}

= \frac{25-12}{30}

= \frac{13}{30}

Since, \frac{25}{30} > \frac{12}{30}

Therefore, Asha’s bookshelf is more full by \frac{13}{30}.

QUESTION 9

Jaidev takes 2\frac{1}{5} minutes to walk across the school ground. Rahul takes \frac{7}{4} minutes to do the same. Who takes less time and by what fraction?

SOLUTION

Time taken by Jaidev to walk across the ground = 2\frac{1}{5} = \frac{11}{5} = \frac{44}{20} minutes

Time taken by Rahul to walk across the ground = = \frac{7}{4} = \frac{35}{20} minutes

Now, \frac{44}{20} - \frac{35}{20}

= \frac{44-35}{20}

= \frac{9}{20}

Since, \frac{44}{20} > \frac{35}{20}

Therefore, Rahul takes less time \frac{9}{20} minutes.
